The auxiliary systems of an electricity transmission substation power the protection, control, command and communication equipment on which its safe operation depends. This project covers their calculation and design, using the Villaviciosa de Odón 400/220 kV substation as a case study. The starting point is the inventory of auxiliary loads. From it, the loads are balanced across phases, the auxiliary transformer is selected and the main low-voltage conductors are sized. The 125 Vdc system that backs up the critical loads is also sized, and the short-circuit currents are calculated at the representative nodes of the network, providing the reference values for the subsequent selection and coordination of the protective devices. The design is built around the N-1 criterion: the installation keeps the essential loads supplied following the loss of a source, an auxiliary transformer or a section of the network. Finally, the adopted solution is checked against the applicable technical and regulatory requirements.en-GB
