Abstract

This thesis studies if the actions carried out by the U.S. under the Donald Trump’s Administration in his second term towards Greenland represent an isolated episode or they are part of a new foreign policy strategy of the U.S. From a perspective of the offensive realism, this thesis studies the continuity and scalation of the interest of the U.S. in Greenland in the second term of Donald Trump against the historical interest of the U.S. in Greenland and the Arctic region. This thesis is based on the growing value of Greenland, based on its strategic position, being part of the GIUK Gap, its early-warning missile defense infrastructure, and the access to the Arctic through new shipping routes due to the effects of global warming. Against this context, this thesis evaluates five hypotheses about the institutionalization of Trump’s foreign policy, the relative weight of his presidential style against structural geopolitical pressures, and the impact on NATO cohesion of the U.S. actions, comparing Trump’s actions towards Greenland with the ones been done in Iran, Venezuela and the NATO allies. The findings suggest that, while the coercive and transactional style of Trump amplifies the rhetoric, the interest of the U.S. in Greenland reflects a rational realist response against the recent geopolitical changes in the Arctic, that will likely persist beyond this Administration, despite the confrontation tone does not.
