Abstract

The chapter examines the close relationship between aesthetics, mysticism, and religious experience in Romanticism through the poetry of Novalis and the paintings of Caspar David Friedrich. It shows how both artists explore tensions between finitude and infinity, death and eternity, nature and transcendence, turning artistic creation into a path toward the divine. In Novalis, death, night, and the loss of love lead to a poetic experience of hope and spiritual union; in Friedrich, nature, the horizon, the cross, ruins, and the figure of the pilgrim acquire mystical significance. The study extends this Romantic tradition into the twentieth and twenty-first centuries through Eduardo Chillida, José Ángel Valente, Bill Viola, and Jon Fosse, demonstrating the persistence of an aesthetic language centred on limits, transcendence, spiritual experience, and the search for the absolute.
