This article examines the situation of children and adolescents living in residential care in Spain and their relationship with the educational system. The author highlights that these children often present special educational needs largely derived from previous experiences of neglect, abandonment, violence, or family breakdown. Despite these challenges, schools play a crucial role as spaces for protection, resilience, and social integration. The paper also emphasizes the barriers these children face in accessing ordinary childhood experiences and activities, which often contributes to their social invisibility. Finally, the article stresses the need to promote family-based alternatives to residential care and underlines the importance of foster, collaborating, and volunteer families. It concludes with a call for educators, families, and society as a whole to become actively involved in supporting and protecting these vulnerable children.en-GB
