The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Spain: A Cultural and Intercultural Approach.

Abstract

España se está convirtiendo en un país multicultural en el contexto actual de globalización cultural. Nuevos idiomas, religiones y culturas empiezan a encontrar su lugar dentro de la sociedad española, incrementando así la importancia de los traductores en su papel de mediadores culturales. Éste es el caso de la Iglesia de Jesucristo de los Santos de los Últimos Días, un nuevo movimiento religioso, originado en Estados Unidos, que recientemente se ha implantado en España. El propósito de éste trabajo es el descubrimiento y el análisis de las diferentes capas, visibles e invisibles, de la cultura y la identidad de la Iglesia de Jesucristo de los Santos de los Últimos Días en España, reflexionando sobre las diferencias y similitudes entre ésta religion y su correspondiente sistema cultural y la identidad Española tradicional, desde un punto de vista translativo y con la idea de futuros trabajos de traducción con gran carga cultural sobre los Santos de los Últimos Días.

In the context of current cultural globalization, Spain is slowly becoming a multicultural country. Cultures, languages and religions are slowly finding their place within the Spanish society, increasing the importance of translators in their role of intercultural mediators. This is the case of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, a new religious movement that originated in the United States and has only recently arrived in Spain. The aim of this research is the discovery and analisis of the visible and invisible layers of the culture and identity of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Spain, reflecting on the differences and similarities between this new religion and the Spanish identity from the point of view of translation and aiming towards future works of translation that involve the culture of the Latter-Day Saints.
