Consideraciones sobre la traducción como transmisor del mito

Abstract

El objetivo de este capítulo es demostrar el papel que la traducción ha tenido a lo largo de la historia en la transmisión de los mitos. Es un tema apenas tratado, a pesar de que haya existido siempre una relación entre mito y traducción. Con mito nos referimos tanto al mito antiguo como al mito moderno. Mientras que el primero proviene de la cultura oral ancestral, el último se ha creado en la cultura escrita. Para ejemplificar estos dos conceptos y el papel de la traducción en la trasmisión de estos mitos realizaremos primero un breve recorrido histórico de la difusión de la mitología antigua relacionándola con la traducción y segundo, nos concentramos en el mito moderno ejemplificado con la obra Don Quijote de la Mancha de Miguel de Cervantes y su proceso de mitificación a través de la traducción.

The objective of this chapter is to demonstrate the role that translation has had throughout history in the transmission of myths. It is a subject scarcely discussed, despite of the fact that there has always been a relationship between myth and translation. By myth we mean both ancient myth and modern myth. While the former comes from the ancestral oral culture, the latter has been created in the written culture. To exemplify these two concepts and the role of translation in the transmission of these myths, we will first carry out a brief historical overview of the diffusion of ancient mythology relating it to translation and second, we will focus on the modern myth exemplified with Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes and its mythification process through translation.
