Translation, revision or writing? Young scientific researchers attitudes towards the languages of research publication.

Abstract

Esta comunicación pretende ofrecer las conclusiones iniciales de un estudio llevado a cabo dentro del Grupo de Trabajo sobre Lenguas y Ciencia del Consejo Europeo de las Lenguas. El estudio consistía en un análisis de las actitudes de un grupo de jóvenes investigadores científicos respecto al dilema de si deberían escribir e intentar publicar directamente en sus propias lenguas, pedir una traducción al inglés de sus textos para poder publicarlos, o escribir inicialmente en inglés y luego solicitar una revisión profesional posterior del texto. El estudio se centraba en un grupo de jóvenes investigadores científicos (de varios países dentro y fuera de la Unión Europea) que están elaborando sus tesis doctorales y planteando sus primeras publicaciones científicas. Dentro del marco de un curso de redacción académica en inglés que estaban siguiendo, se llevó a cabo una encuesta acerca de sus actitudes y prácticas respecto a esta cuestión, así como sus opiniones sobre la calidad científica de la investigación a) escrita en su lengua materna b) traducida directamente al inglés y c) escrita en inglés para una posterior revisión profesional.

This paper seeks to present the initial conclusions reached by a study conducted as part of the European Language Council (ECL) Working Group on Languages and Science . The study consisted of an analysis of the attitudes of a group of young scientific researchers towards the dilemma of whether to write and attempt to publish directly in their own language, have their texts directly translated into English for publication, or write initially in English for subsequent professional revision. The study focused on a group of young scientific researchers (from various EU and non-EU countries) working towards their PhDs and preparing their first research publications. As part of a course in academic writing in English, a survey was made of their attitudes and practices in relation to this question as well as their opinions of the scientific quality of the research a) written in their own mother tongue b) translated directly into English and c) written in English for subsequent professional revision.
