La crisis identitaria de las heroínas de Julia Álvarez: el difícil equilibrio entre tradición y modernidad

Abstract

La presente investigación considera el lugar fundamental ocupado por Julia Álvarez dentro de la literatura hispana en Estados Unidos y más aún dentro de la "Latina Literature". Se basa sobre un análisis estructural y temático de sus cinco novelas de ficción: How the García Girls Lost Their Accents (1991), In the Time of the Butterflies (1994), ¡Yo! (1997), In the Name of Salomé (2000) y Saving the World (2006). Está enfocada sobre aspectos comunes entre estas novelas en la manera de representar los problemas identitarios de las heroínas y parte de la hipótesis de que estos problemas se deben a un difícil equilibrio entre tradición y modernidad. Los resultados encontrados permitieron validar parcialmente la hipótesis de trabajo inicial. En How the García Girls Lost Their Accents y ¡Yo!, se pudo comprobar que la crisis identitaria de las protagonistas estaba vinculada a un distanciamiento con la tradición mientras que en In the Time of the Butterflies e In the Name of Salomé se debía a una conexión estrecha de las heroínas con la familia y el pasado. En Saving the World, se observó que la heroína estaba en crisis por verse atrapada en una vida tradicional aspirando a sentirse más libre.

The present study is based on the essential role played by Julia Álvarez in the fields of Hispanic and Latina literatures in the United States. It offers a structural and thematic analysis of her five adult fiction novels: How the García Girls Lost Their Accents (1991), In the Time of the Butterflies (1994), ¡Yo! (1997), In the Name of Salomé (2000) and Saving the World (2006). It focuses on common aspects between the novels in the way the identity issues of the heroines are addressed. It is based on the hypothesis that these issues are caused by a difficult balance between tradition and modernity. The main findings of this study provided a partial validation of the initial hypothesis. Whereas in How the García Girls Lost Their Accents and ¡Yo! it was found that the identity crisis of the protagonists was indeed associated to a rift with tradition, in the case of In the Time of the Butterflies and In the Name of Salomé this crisis was caused by a close tightrelationship of the heroines with their families and their past. In Saving the World, the heroine experienced a different kind of crisis based on a feeling of being caught in a traditional life and on a longing for more freedom.
