Música y contexto sociopolítico en los años 70. Un análisis de tres discos de Pink Floyd, The Sex Pistols y The Clash, respectivamente, en relación con la situación sociopolítica del Reino Unido en los años 70

Abstract

Este Trabajo de Fin de Grado tiene por objetivo demostrar cómo las letras de tres famosos discos de The Clash, los Sex Pistols y Pink Floyd, (London Calling, Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols y Animals, respectivamente) reflejan fielmente los asuntos políticos y sociales acaecidos en Reino Unido durante la década de los 70. Desde un punto de vista más amplio, el objetivo del trabajo también es demostrar cómo el arte siempre puede ser explicado dentro de un contexto y cómo forma parte de la historia tanto como cualquier otro elemento. En primer lugar, en el marco teórico se hace un recorrido por los años 70 en Reino Unido, por la música popular en esa época y por la historia de los tres grupos musicales. Posteriormente, el análisis se centra en identificar los temas de inquietud social de la época plasmados en las letras de las canciones mediante un análisis cualitativo de las mismas. Los asuntos característicos de la década de los 70 en Reino Unido, como el desempleo, el consumo masivo, la incompetencia política o el racismo, se identifican a su manera en los tres discos elegidos, proporcionando así una visión general de cómo fue la década en el país.

This TFG project aims to demonstrate how the lyrics of three famous music albums of the 70s (The Clash’s London Calling, Sex Pistols’ Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols and Pink Floyd’s Animals, respectively) clearly depict the political and sociological problems occurred during the decade in the United Kingdom. From a wider perspective, the goal of this project is also to demonstrate how art ―especially music― can always be explained taking its context as a frame of reference and how it is as much a part of history as any other element. Firstly, the theoretical framework presents the situation during the 70s in the United Kingdom, the characteristics of the popular music of the period and finally a brief history of the three chosen bands. Secondly, the analysis consists in identifying the main topics of the 70s United Kingdom on the lyrics of the songs through a qualitative analysis of those. The main concerning issues of the 70s decade in the United Kingdom, such as unemployment, mass consumption, political ineptitude and racism appear in their own way in the lyrics of the three chosen albums, thus providing an overview of what the decade was like in the country.
