dc.description.abstract | The following paper contributes to the analysis of private equity investments in Spanish firms and the effects on the latter’s financial results. By applying the synthetic control method, as first described by Abadie & Gardeazabal (2003), a weighted portfolio of companies acts as a replica of the entity which we wish to observe, facilitating the study of the causal effect of private equity intervention. This process allows us to compare the actual evolution of a firm acquired by private equity with that which would have taken place had the company not been bought out, as taken from the evolution of a replica, referred to as its synthetic control. Consequently, we are able to isolate and analyze the direct effects of the acquisition on the relevant company. The investigation studies the evolution of revenue for the Spanish firm Arenal Perfumerías, acquired by private equity fund Corpfin Capital in 2016, and evaluates whether a significant change in revenue can be attributed to the private equity buyout. An interview with Corpfin Capital managing partner Gorka García gives further insights regarding the transaction. Results show a clear causal relationship between the Corpfin Capital buyout of Arenal Perfumerías and an increase in revenue beyond that of its synthetic control. This difference can be attributed to an aggressive growth strategy as well as a series of management and operational changes which highlight the added value of private equity in achieving higher growth than competitors. | en-GB |
