Cine europeo y diversidad cultural: la aportación del Parlamento Europeo a través del LUX Prize

Abstract

En 2007, el Parlamento Europeo creó el LUX Prize Films Award para fomentar el fortalecimiento de la identidad europea a través del cine. Los largometrajes que optan a este premio deben mostrar el alcance universal de los valores europeos y la diversidad de las tradiciones de Europa, así como dar luz para su proceso de integración. El premio se destina a facilitar la circulación de las películas a través de Europa ya que financia su subtitulado a todas las lenguas oficiales de la Unión Europea y su promoción y exhibición en los Estados Miembros. El LUX Prize tuvo trece ediciones con su diseño original (2007-2019). En 2020, se transformó en el LUX Audience Award, fusionando el LUX Prize del Parlamento Europeo con el EFA’s People’s Choice Award de la Academia del Cine Europeo. El objetivo es analizar los 13 largometrajes ganadores del LUX Prize para comprobar su contribución a la diversidad cultural a través de sus personajes principales y secundarios, sus diferentes nacionalidades, razas y etnias representadas, y los encuentros culturales que se derivan de las relaciones entre ellas. En el encuentro con el Otro, el Yo o la cultura nativa sufre un proceso de aprendizaje o autodescubrimiento, y se puede observar la capacidad de relativizar la propia cultura o identidad (Delanty, 2009), El marco teórico se basa en los trabajos de Albornoz y García Leiva, McGonagle, Parekh y Bayraktar, Stjernholm, y Baschiera y Di Chiara. La metodología utilizada es el análisis del discurso; con una técnica mixta, tanto a través de variables como de indicadores cualitativos. Los resultados aportarán evidencias sobre la diversidad cultural las nacionalidades, razas y etnias y encuentros culturales entre ellas. Las conclusiones permitirán argumentar sobre la contribución del LUX Prize a la diversidad cultural en Europa

In 2007, the European Parliament established the LUX Prize Award to foster European identity through cinema. Feature films candidates to the award must show the universal scope of European values, and the diversity of its traditions. The award is aimed at facilitating the films distribution throughout Europe, since it finances their subtitles into all official languages in the EU, as well as their promotion and exhibition. The LUX Prize had 13 editions in its original format (2007-2019). In 2020 it was transformed into LUX Audience Award, merging with EFA’s People’s Choice Award by the European Film Academy. The aim of the study is to analyze all 13 award winning films to test their contribution to cultural diversity through their main and secondary roles, looking at their different nationalities, races and ethnic groups that are represented in them. The research also looks into the cultural encounters which derive from the relations established amongst those nationalities, races and ethnicities. In the encounter with the Other, the native culture goes under a learning process of self-discovery, and it helps observe the capacity of relativization of one’s own culture or identity (Delanty, 2009). The theoretical framework is based on Works by Albornoz and García Leiva; McGonagle, Parekh and Bayraktar; Stjernholm; Baschiera and Di Chiara. The methodology is discourse analysis through a mixed techniques of variables and qualitative indicators. The results will show evidence about cultural diversity (nationalities, races and ethnicities) and cultural encounters within. Conclusions will allow to test the contribution of LUX Prize to cultural diversity in Europe.
