We approach Heinrich Heine s Harzreise from a translational point of view to account for the Spanish translations that have been made of this literary work, most of them unknown in Spain. In this emblematic story, Heine conveys a subjective image of the age he witnessed. Cultural markers, which make up the plot and add color, contribute to form the specific cultural identity. In their versions translators have to resort to a series of interventions to translate the elements that explicitly or implicitly refer to a particular culture. The translations show problems in the transfer of cultural elements and their connotative values having consequences for the reception of the author in Spain in its broader context.
