Aplicaciones de generación termoeléctrica en entornos domésticos aislados

Abstract

Actualmente existen zonas del mundo con dificultades para acceder a la red eléctrica convencional. Las nuevas tecnologías basadas en el uso de fuentes renovables sirven de enlace para unir estas zonas con la generación de electricidad sostenible. Sin embargo, estas tecnologías renovables normalmente acarrean elevados costes. Los generadores termoeléctricos son una alternativa capaz de generar electricidad a partir del calor residual sin la necesidad de una turbina, con altas esperanzas de vida útil, diseños modulares y de reducido tamaño. Los efectos termoeléctricos (Peltier, Seebeck o Thomson) relacionan la generación de un voltaje eléctrico con la generación de un gradiente de temperatura o viceversa. En este proyecto se ha estudiado la generación termoeléctrica, los componentes principales que suelen constituir sus equipos y las distintas aplicaciones que tiene en la industria actualmente. También se han estudiado los distintos proyectos y prototipos que se están llevando a cabo para estudiar y desarrollar esta tecnología, para poder así identificar los retos a los que se enfrenta esta tecnología y las oportunidades que se deben aprovechar para explotarla. Se ha realizado un estudio experimental con células Peltier y Seebeck, para caracterizarlas y determinar su eficiencia de conversión de energía térmica a eléctrica, y para poder construir varios prototipos que aprovechen el efecto termoeléctrico. Por último, se ha diseñado y construido un prototipo de generación termoeléctrica, capaz de alimentar una batería de teléfono móvil o pequeños dispositivos de iluminación, para utilizarse sobre los hornos típicamente utilizados en las cocinas de los entornos domésticamente aislados de la red eléctrica. Se ha desarrollado un modelo matemático para deducir la distribución de temperaturas a lo largo de las patas de los equipos, se ha preparado un presupuesto estimado del estudio y comercialización del prototipo y se ha estudiado la viabilidad de comercialización del prototipo en el mercado.Nowadays there exist areas of the world with difficulties accessing the conventional electrical grid. New technologies based on the use of renewable sources serve as a link to connect these areas with the generation of sustainable electricity. However, these renewable technologies usually entail high costs. Thermoelectric generators are an alternative capable of generating electricity from waste heat without the need of a turbine, with high life expectancy, modular designs and small sizes. Thermoelectric effects (Peltier, Seebeck or Thomson) relate the generation of an electrical voltage to the generation of a temperature gradient or vice versa. In this project, thermoelectric generation has been studied, the main components that usually make up its equipment and the different applications it currently has in the industry. The different projects and prototypes that are being carried out to study and develop this technology have also been studied, in order to identify the challenges that this technology faces and the opportunities that must be taken advantage of to exploit it. An experimental study has been carried out with Peltier and Seebeck cells, to characterize them and determine their efficiency of conversion from thermal to electrical energy, and to be able to build several prototypes that take advantage of the thermoelectric effect. Finally, a thermoelectric generation prototype has been designed and built, capable of powering a mobile phone battery or small lighting devices, to be used on ovens typically used in kitchens in domestic environments isolated from the electrical grid. A mathematical model has been developed to deduce the distribution of temperatures along the legs of the equipment, an estimated budget for the study and commercialization of the prototype has been prepared and the feasibility of commercializing the prototype in the market has been studied.
