Do oil prices impact on transportation? Evidence from random matrix theory

Abstract

El estudio analiza si los precios del petróleo, el gas natural y sus derivados influyen en el rendimiento bursátil de empresas de transporte a escala mundial. Mediante técnicas de teoría de matrices aleatorias y la prueba de Onatski, se examinan datos diarios de empresas pertenecientes a los subsectores de transporte de pasajeros y de servicios de carga y logística. También se evalúan cinco precios de referencia: Brent, gas natural, gasóleo bajo en azufre, gasolina RBOB y combustible para calefacción. Los resultados indican que ninguno de estos precios explica de forma significativa la evolución transversal de las rentabilidades bursátiles del sector. Aunque se detectan hasta cuatro factores relevantes con niveles de confianza del 90 % y 95 %, uno de ellos asociado al mercado, los precios energéticos analizados no forman parte de esos factores. El trabajo aporta una perspectiva global útil para responsables públicos, inversores y gestores.This study examines whether oil, natural gas, and derivative prices affect the stock-market performance of transportation companies worldwide. Using Random Matrix Theory techniques and the Onatski test, it analyzes daily data from firms in Passenger Transportation Services and Freight and Logistics Services. Five benchmark prices are assessed: Brent crude oil, natural gas, low-sulphur gasoil, RBOB gasoline, and heating oil. The findings show that none of these energy prices significantly explains the cross-section of transportation stock returns. Although up to four relevant factors are identified at the 90% and 95% confidence levels, including a market-related factor, the tested oil and gas benchmarks are not among them. At the 99% confidence level, no significant factor is generally detected. The study offers a global perspective that may help policymakers, investors, shareholders, and fund managers make better-informed decisions about transportation-sector investments.
